Tucked away at 800 Bay Street sits Snookie Wade Park. Many pass by without even realizing it’s there. But this park's name carries a legacy. Before the park bore his name, "Snookie" was known simply as a neighbor, a friend, and an advocate for those living with special needs.
Martin Jesse "Snookie" Wade was born in 1924. He and his mother lived on the northeast corner of 8th and Bay Street. This home would later become his sister, Shirley's house. When "Snookie's" mother became too old to care for him, Shirley moved in. The "Snookie Wade Park" is across from where they lived. The house is now gone, unfortunately.
Snookie was well-known figure around Morehead City. He would often be seen snacking on Cheez-Its. And welcoming folks with his smile. He was a member of the Station Club in Beaufort, where he would spend his time working on crafts and charming instructors.
Snookie passed away in 1987. The park was dedicated to him on March 3, 1987.
