"Come experience it!" - Sarah Vaughn
Amidst the hustle and bustle of Evans Street sits a store that has become a staple in our downtown Morehead City community. What started 10 years ago has grown into a local and tourist destination. For owners, Jeff and Sarah what started as a passion project has become something far greater than they ever imagined. Sea Paws is an opportunity to educate, help and give purpose.
What sparked Jeff’s deep consideration of this new career move (that we now know as Sea Paws) was something surprisingly simple. Jeff was shopping for food for his dog, Earl. When he asked about nutrients and ingredients in the food, the employee had to google them. This simple interaction is what sparked Jeff's new passion. He came home and told Sarah (who has always been a lover of all things animals) and the seed was planted.
Jeff and Sarah left the Piedmont behind for a fresh start on the coast, where they opened Sea Paws. But this isn’t just a place to dash in for a dog toy or a bag of kibble. It is something more. At Sea Paws, everyone is welcome. Bring your dog or come on your own. You’ll feel at home either way. And once you step inside, you’ll discover there’s far more waiting for you than you might expect.
A slide show plays on a tv showing off dogs that have visited from the week. Sarah posts about these friendly visitors on their social media platforms. A couch is located in the center for the furry visitors to relax while mom and dad shop. Everything inside is vetted through Jeff and Sarah. They only deal with small USA family run businesses. They know the products and can teach you about every single item they sell. The knowledge they have on each and every item is extensive and inspiring.
One of the most endearing touches you’ll notice is the trail of paw prints across the ceiling. This started with Earl, Sarah and Jeff's dog that passed away. During their special events like Yappy Hour, (they hold special events throughout the year so check their social media for dates) Jeff will pull down a tile for dog prints. The ceiling has become a memorial for those that have passed and a place you can visit your beloved pet.
Another wonderful thing that Sarah and Jeff do is that they partner with other small businesses. Their adorable mugs and dog dishes are handcrafted by BluSail on Arendell Street. Their poop bag holders are 3D printed by a local student. It's these subtle collaborations that not only bring awareness to other businesses but continue our small-town camaraderie and encouragement.
When you enter Sea Paws, you're entering a friend's store. You're going to learn about products, have a laugh or two, and come out of there feeling like you just visited family. Sea Paws is not just a store. It's an amazing experience that is open to all.
